A Safe Alternative for Student Housing

SoberDorm

When I left treatment at 18, the thought of reentering public school terrified me. I had done well in treatment, but wondered how it would be to go back to school with a bunch of normal kids again. I was lucky enough to find a sober high school program that helped keep my mind on sobriety and encourage me to pursue outside support. I went from a failing high school student to a straight A graduate. When I went to college, I didn’t feel ready for a university, since most university’s require you live in the dorms for your first year. I knew the dorms were no place for me. I got an apartment with a friend from treatment and went to community college for a year. I transferred to UNT my sophomore year and got an apartment at a place that assigned roommates. I had roommates that partied, so I didn’t spend much time with them. After my first semester I was offered the position to manage a halfway house in Denton for women. It was close to UNT and I jumped on the opportunity.  The women in the house are required  to work full time while they live in the house, and I got some inquiries from the girls of college age about going back to college. I began to think about the students leaving treatment, sober high schools, and those just trying to sober up. I know from experience college can be discouraging and intimidating idea to a student trying to recover. I suggested the idea of housing full time students to our director, and sober dorm was born.
